Mill Street Café , Your Community café

Situated in Guernsey- a small island, off the Normandy coast, north of Saint Malo and west of Cotentin Peninsula, is Mill Street Café, a safe community café that formally was The Caritas Community Café. The site, as history has it, was purchased nine years ago, by the Church of England Deanery, whose lease came to an end in 2021.The property was later, in 2021, acquired by a philanthropist whose intention was to preserve and propagate the spirit of togetherness and generosity enhanced by the community café.

What sticks this café out, relative to other numerous cafes in Guernsey, is the ambience it provides in ensuring togetherness and affordability of food for people from all walks of life, culture, affiliations and thoughts. In the words of Mr. Bellinger, former Caritas Community Trust,

What is special about this café is that everyone is welcome and given attention. It is a place where you can be embraced. A terrific atmosphere.”

It rides on the culture of making Guernsey a better and affordable place. Quite a trite saying, but one that clearly defines Mill Street’s purpose, is that people may forget what you say to them, but not how you make them feel. The café seeks to make people feel at home, accepted, appreciated and their needs taken care of. Society well-being is at its heart. It aims at supporting people from all parts of the economic spectrum by offering affordable food and services, as well as growing their customers’ self-esteem.

As Mrs. Devine, café manager, would put it, “ this is a place for the ‘hidden society’– them that feel lonely and need company”. Mill Street Café is your to-go-to place. A safe meeting place for the whole community, to party and for those that can’t obsess enough over food, healthy and cultural food, well, slide into Mill Street Café.

It offers various meaty, vegetarian as well as vegan specials. Not to mention the gluten-free options. Are you a stickler for tasty cakes? Home-made vegetables? Or rather, would you love your takeaway meal done by the richest cooks? Mill Street Café is your place.

To support those that are not able to afford meals at the café, yet want to feel included in the community, the café accepts donations from almsgivers. Better still, for them that community service is at the core of their existence, the café accepts volunteering services.

Don’t spend your days alone when you can slide into the Mill Street Café.
