The flavour of Zimbabwean cuisines? Crazy
November 2022, Simba Ngoma decided to honour, what in my view, is the ‘Mother of Indigenous Cuisines’ of Africa -Zimbabwe, by holding a Zimbabwean cuisine night, to savor various foods adored by the people of Zimbabwe.
Were you to take a trip into the heart of Zimbabwean cuisine, exotic meats spiced with fresh ingredients will definitely be among, if not topping your list. Heard of the boerewors? No?

Boerewors is a type of sausage, derived from the words “boer” for farmer and ‘wors ” for sausage. Commonly made from minced meat and spices. Boerewors happens to be one of the presently enjoyed street foods among most Africans.
Then there is chakalaka, a vegetable salad served with bread( depending on how light it is prepared) , meat sausages or any pair of your choice.
Sadza, a traditional starch and staple food for the people of Zimbabwe. Popular for health benefits associated with its consumption, such as regulating blood sugar levels. It is prepared using either corn flour or millet flour, and best served with the vegetable of your choice, or/and meat. Fun Fact? When you order for Sadza, what you actually get charged for is the meat accompaniment. Interesting, Huh?
Mupunga unedovi
This is a Zimbabwean term for “rice with peanut butter”- a finger-licking traditional delicacy from this country from the south of Africa. Mostly savored during traditional events such as weddings and funerals.

Gango

Simply stated, it is a mixture of different types of meat. From chicken gizzards and necks, beef, pork…you name it…and vegetables, all spiced up. If asked, I will name it as the food-fabric that knits the Zimbabwean community together.
